Phill Greenland

Teacher

Phill Greenland has been teaching and performing in the NYC area since 1990. He began piano at age seven, eventually attending Edison State College, the University of Florida, and Westminster Choir College. He was trained classically, but leans heavily on jazz/standards.

His career began in New York theatre, as a sub for a couple 1990s Broadway musicals you’ve never heard of, and a few you have. As a composer, his Edgar Allan Poe song cycle toured the East Coast, and he’s currently working on setting to music the poems of Thomas Gray, author of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.

As a performer, Phill is proud to have played a quirky list of venues including Walt Disney World, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, London Bridge Train Station, and the crypts under Greenwood Cemetery. A favorite memory is playing London’s 1676 Renatus Harris organ, the oldest surviving pipe organ in England.

His teaching experience is wide ranging, having taught in NYC public and private schools, conservatories, and with special needs programs. He prides himself on being easygoing and adaptive, teaching to students’ strengths and interests, and even being a bit goofy.

Phill’s principal instruments are piano and organ, with additional experience teaching winds and early learning music exploration.
